Two More FHSD Students Earn Perfect ACT Scores

FHSD takes pride in student achievements, knowing that they are stepping-stones to even greater accomplishments. Students set themselves apart in many ways and in many classes, but one indicator that measures a large scope of a student’s learning is the ACT test. This year, two more FHSD students – Riley Lawson of Francis Howell North and Michael Yu of Francis Howell Central – not only achieved success but actually reached perfection.

Of all high school students in the United States in 2017, only 2,760 out of the more than 2 million who took the ACT earned a composite score of 36. That means only one-tenth of 1 percent of the students who take the ACT earn a perfect 36 on the test. So to see that multiple FHSD students reached perfection again this year is truly amazing.

From FHN, junior Riley Lawson’s name is often associated with success in many academic and extracurricular activities. He seems to seek out problems to solve. Kim Coil teaches social studies at FHN, one of the many subject areas in which the young man excels. Coil was pleasantly unsurprised by Lawson’s score. “Riley loves a challenge and he challenged himself to get a perfect score,” Coil said. “He worked hard to perfect each and every aspect of the test for himself. He is an avid and efficient reader. He has amazing study skills and a mind that is able to work quickly and efficiently. He is able to deduce answers through logic and reason. These skills will serve him well in college and beyond!”

At FHC, Michael Yu has established himself as an academic star, but he brightens the room with more than his intellect. It’s his attitude that sets him apart. “Michael is great,” said Nick Beckmann, AP Government teacher at FHC. “He comes to class every day with an enthusiasm to learn, even if Government was not his favorite subject. He’s a math and science guy, but he took a real interest in the government, which doesn’t always happen. Michael is an entertaining kid, and a joy to have in class.”

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school. It consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science, each scored on a scale of 1-36. A student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. Students who earn a 36 composite score have likely mastered all of the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in first-year college courses in the core subject areas. All major four-year colleges and universities across the U.S. accept ACT scores.
