The first day of school can be full of changes with new classes, teachers, and friends. But at Francis Howell Central, students were treated to a brand new cafeteria with brand new lunch options with the Sodexo Taste4 program.

FHC’s cafeteria brought some unique challenges that delayed the release date for Taste4. Metal poles guided students through the lunch line, which caused traffic jams and a slower pace. “It was too costly to do a complete remodel of FHC’s cafeteria and would have postponed implementing this amazing food program for another year,” said Director of Finance Cindy Reilmann. “Instead, we removed the poles, upgraded the electrical to accommodate the monitors, and upgraded the serving stations so that the students could enjoy Taste4 menu options for the 2019-20 school year. This program has seen success at both FHHS and FHN, with lunch participation increasing on average 10% over the previous year.”

Sodexo interviewed 300 students from 15 different states to determine what they wanted most during lunch. Students shared that they wanted their food to be fresh and fun, filled with flavor, and wanted more time to enjoy their meal with friends. “This menu is designed with that in mind and offers new and exciting options for students to choose from with plenty of variety in both dishes and flavors,” said Food Service Manager and District Chef Karin Mann. The new menu features global flavors, shakable seasonings, specialty sauce, and a wide variety of healthier options.

Senior Catherine Analla was excited by the new options as soon as she walked into the updated lunch room. “It’s fresh and new. I like the set-up and the new boats. It feels more like a college cafeteria.”

But the lunchroom doesn’t appeal to just students. Staff and administration were also intrigued by the new options. “We won’t see a brown bag lunch strike this year,” said Assistant Principal Dave Stofer. “I’ll never bring my lunch again. The salad option is great!”

Sodexo employees are also excited to be offering new options to students. “I love it,” said Heather Toebben, FHC’s kitchen lead. “We offer more to students, it flows better, and we have fresher ingredients. The recipes are new and interesting.”

FHC is the last of FHSD’s high schools to implement the Taste4 program, both FHHS and FHN started the program during the 2018-19 school year.
